eXtyles can easily handle simple footnotes that are a single paragraph of text. If footnotes are formatted using Word’s linked note feature, eXtyles will automatically “flatten” the notes (i.e., unlink them) during document Activation. The footnote references will become simple superscript numbers and the footnote text will be moved to the end of the Word document.

Then, during Citation Matching, eXtyles will associate the superscript note reference with the note text and will apply the character style cite_fn to the note reference, as in the following example.

It is important that the footnote text be styled using the eXtyles Footnote Text paragraph style from the eXtyles style palette.

The XML will then include markup that associates the footnote text with the reference.
