Inline Standard Citation Processing

The Inline Standards Citation Processing feature identifies and applies character styles and Word comments to the text of in-line citations to standards published by known bodies. For example:

5.1.1 Machinery shall comply with the safety requirements and/or protective measures of this clause. In addition, the machine shall be designed in accordance with the principles of ISO 12100:—, Clause 4, for hazards relevant, but not significant, which are not dealt with by this part of ISO 4254.

This eXtyles module applies character styles to standard citations during processing; these character styles, which have the prefix “std_”, have several functions.

First, they indicate how eXtyles has identified the elements of the citation—for example, the character style “std_ publisher” applied to “ISO” (ISO) indicates that eXtyles considered that element of the citation to be the publisher of the corresponding standard. An editor may verify that eXtyles properly identified the citation elements by checking that the correct character styles were applied to each part of the citation.

Second, these character styles represent semantic information added to the document that may be used later in processing, such as by the eXtyles Export filter in producing enriched XML. Because the character styles serve as a proxy for tagging, they should not be removed from a document that will be exported to XML; however, they should be edited if they have been incorrectly applied.

Note that no formatting of the in-line citations is performed by this process.

Inline Standards Citation Processing also provides helpful warnings, via Word comments, when a Normative Reference is not cited at least once in the document and when undated citations to standards in the text reference a specific object; for example, “ISO 9001, Section 6.2,” because objects (in this case “Section 6.2”) should only be referenced from dated citations.
