1 Understand the Queries

Once Standards Bibliographic Reference Processing and Inline Standards Citation Matching have applied tags and character styles to standard references and inline citations, the Standards Validation feature can validate those citations against a web-based service (e.g., ISO standards against an ISO web service, EN standards against a CEN web service for CEN members).

The response from the query server is used to update or provide information about the state of the standard being cited.

The Standards Validation process will add Word comments to standard references and citations based on the parameters defined in the following table.

Regardless of the server response code, eXtyles automatically reformats standard citations

Example: updating the two hyphens in “ISO 12100:--” to the em-dash in ISO 12100:—.

Understand the Queries

The following is a list of the comment text added by eXtyles via Word comments, the response codes, and an explanation of what eXtyles does during validation.

The reference is to a withdrawn standard which has been replaced	The citation is matched to a single record by the query server, but the corresponding standard has been withdrawn and replaced by a newer standard. No change is made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
The reference is to a withdrawn standard	The citation is matched to a single record by the query server, but the corresponding standard has been withdrawn. No change is made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Not publicly available, {0}	The citation is matched to a single record by the query server, but the corresponding standard is not currently available. No change is made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Not found, but similar references exist	The citation is not matched to a single record by the query server, but the server returns several proposed matches, which are listed in the comment. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Project canceled	The citation is matched to a single record by the query server, but the corresponding standard has been canceled. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Not found	The citation is not matched to an existing standard by the query server. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Invalid reference	The citation is not considered to be a standard citation by the query server. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
The originator of the reference is unknown and cannot be validated	The citation cites a standard to a publishing body not supported by the query server, such as “EN” or “IEC”. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.
Validation service returned error: {0}	The query service encountered an unhandled error attempting to match the citation occurring in the manuscript. No changes are made to the text of the citation in the manuscript.

Note that regardless of the type of comment and response code, eXtyles may adjust the formatting and punctuation of a citation in addition to the behavior determined by the query response.
