Getting Started with eXtyles

eXtyles is a fully configurable and expandable suite of tools that allow you to work in the familiar Microsoft Word environment. Once installed, the eXtyles menu appears on the Word menu ribbon as a separate tab. This new tab lists all of your organization’s eXtyles tools as well as handy shortcuts to native Word functions.

This section, “Getting Started with eXtyles,” will help you do just that: get started with eXtyles!

Overview of eXtyles

eXtyles allows you to automate editing, styling, and XML creation in the familiar Microsoft Word environment. It provides a bridge between editorial departments, which need easy-to-use tools, and production departments, which increasingly need XML for web, print, and ePub production.

eXtyles extends the functionality of Word by automating the formatting and structuring of documents derived from various sources and by enforcing specific editorial style requirements. It is an integrated suite of tools that simplifies the time-consuming and error-prone aspects of cleaning up, styling, and editing content. eXtyles enables you to:

  • Mold Word documents into a standard style

  • Automatically edit references to a preferred style

  • Check Harvard- or Vancouver-style reference citations

  • Export valid XML directly from Word (JATS, BITS, and other DTDs)

  • Improve editorial quality and cut production costs

Every version of eXtyles offers specific editorial features as well as XML export options customized for each publisher’s unique workflow needs.

eXtyles Support

If you encounter problems while working with eXtyles, please check the support pages at http://support.extyles.com/support/home . Most common issues are described there.

Technical support queries should be communicated to your organization’s internal eXtyles liaison (this person is usually chosen during User Training). He or she will then contact Inera and will be responsible for communicating Inera’s replies to the eXtyles users in your organization.

All technical support questions should be sent to eXtyles-support@inera.com. Inera’s support team strives to respond to all queries in a timely manner. To help the support team address your query as efficiently as possible please provide the following information, if possible, when submitting technical support queries:

  • A complete description of the problem, including the eXtyles step at which the problem occurred

  • Your version of Microsoft Windows

  • Your version of Microsoft Word

  • Your eXtyles build number (this can be retrieved by clicking the “About eXtyles” button on the eXtyles ribbon)

  • Any relevant documents, including the working version and $base or $original files created by eXtyles during processing

This information will help the support team solve your problem quickly and efficiently.

Installation

eXtyles is an advanced add-on to Microsoft Word that is simple to install. Before installing eXtyles, review the following software and hardware requirements and recommendations:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, or MS365 (desktop client only)

  • Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, or 11

  • 1024 × 768 screen resolution (minimum)

  • 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core CPU equivalent or faster (recommended: systems less than four years old)

  • 8 GB RAM (minimum; we recommend twice the minimum Microsoft specification for any combination of Windows and Word)

  • 200 MB free HD space to install

  • Internet access for certain processes (e.g., Crossref Reference Checking)

eXtyles supports 64-bit Windows, but 64-bit Microsoft Office does not support eXtyles. As of November 2022 you must use 32-bit Word to use eXtyles.

Before installing eXtyles, ensure that you are logged into your PC under an account with administrator privileges. Quit Microsoft Word before running these steps.

To install eXtyles:

  1. Double-click the eXtyles installation file that you downloaded from the provided URL; this file will probably look something like eXtylesUSGS1234.exe.

  2. The InstallShield Wizard will open and provide you with step-by-step instructions for entering your user information and installing the program.

  3. If necessary, install any patch files according to the instructions provided by Inera

  4. Start Microsoft Word.

  5. If necessary, accept the security alert to allow macros signed by Inera Inc. to run. You will see the eXtyles menu added to the Word ribbon (or to the Word menus in earlier versions of Word).

If you do not see the eXtyles menu/ribbon in Word after installation, please visit our FAQ at http://support.extyles.com or contact eXtyles technical support at eXtyles-support@inera.com.
