Crossref Reference Linking and Correction

Crossref is an official DOI registration firm that functions as a cooperative cross-publisher collaboration to enable accurate and useful citation linking via DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers). A DOI is an identifier that is unique for each content item and it does not change with time.

To run Crossref Reference Linking and Correction on a document:

  1. Complete Bibliographic Reference processing, including the cleanup and reprocessing of all references that eXtyles did not automatically fix.
  2. Be sure you have a connection to the Internet.
  3. Select eXtyles > Advanced Processing > Crossref Reference Linking and Correction.

Crossref Reference Linking and Correction should take approximately 30 seconds for 60 references, and it includes the following features:

  1. It informs you of the number of references that match rather than the number that failed to match.
  2. Its results are generally quite good, but occasionally incorrect results occur because eXtyles will try to match a reference even if not all components of the reference are correct. In all cases in which a match is made with this so-called fuzzy matching, you will receive a warning in the Word document that the reference data and the Crossref data do not match.
  3. It has been configured to automatically insert the DOI as a hyperlink in the reference section. This insertion makes it easy to identify which references have been matched on Crossref.

Crossref Linking Only

In some cases, a user may want to link to CrossRef without adding any additional information to the reference. In order to add the DOI without adding additional information, the user may run Crossref Linking Only from the Advanced Processing menu.

Reference Correction

Crossref Reference Linking and Correction will also intelligently mark and merge discrepancies between your reference and the Crossref record. Further, Crossref correction will add missing data (e.g., additional author names or missing volume or page numbers) to the reference. However, Crossref correction will not attempt to correct existing data (e.g., article titles) supplied by the author; rather, the process will provide a warning that information does not match.

Note

Crossref Reference Linking and Correction only attempts to match against the Crossref database those references identified as <jrn>, <bok>, or <edb> during Bibliographic Reference processing.

In the following example, Crossref correction has identified discrepancies between content in the reference in the Word document and content on the Crossref record. These discrepancies are noted in Word comments:

When these types of comments are returned by the Crossref Linking and Correction process, the editor can simply click to the document's online record via the DOI link that eXtyles inserted, verify the reference information, and make corrections to the reference as needed.

Further, for some discrepancies, eXtyles Crossref Linking and Correction will provide the information from the Crossref record in the Word comment in a format that allows the editor to simply copy and paste from the comment into the reference entry. In the following example, Crossref Linking and Correction identified a discrepancy between the author names in the reference and in the Crossref record:

If the editor determines that the information in the Crossref record is correct, the author names can simply be copied and pasted from the comment into the Word document. Note that in the Word comment the correct author names are presented in the correct editorial style and are color coded with the correct eXtyles character styles.
