After you’ve reviewed your document, the first step in using eXtyles is Document Audit > Font Audit. This process identifies all of the fonts used in your document.

Font Audit will also detect and report any Microsoft Office Equation Objects. Depending on your workflow, you may use this information to find and convert the Office Equation Objects to MathType objects.

Font Audit alerts you about unsupported fonts in your document that could cause problems!

How to use Font Audit

To run Font Audit:

  1. Click Document Audit on the eXtyles tab.

  2. Select Font Audit.
A dialog box will appear listing all fonts used in your document and telling you whether it contains any Equation Builder objects:

  3. Review the list of fonts, which will fall into one of the following categories:

  • Windows fonts supported by eXtyles

  • Special character fonts supported by eXtyles

  • Mac fonts fully supported by eXtyles

  • Special character fonts not supported by eXtyles

The Font Audit dialog box tells you which fonts used in the document are supported by eXtyles:

  • If all fonts are supported, the dialog will say, “All fonts in this document are supported by eXtyles.”

  • When unknown or unsupported fonts are identified, the dialog will give a specific warning:

What to do with Font Audit results

In most cases, you can simply review the list of supported fonts (the eXtyles User Documentation includes a list of supported and unsupported fonts).

Most commonly used fonts (e.g., Times, Arial, Courier, Symbol) are fully supported. In general, any font with a standard character layout is fully supported. However, if after running Font Audit you encounter any font that is not listed among the known unsupported fonts, follow any instructions that appear in the dialog box. For unsupported or unknown fonts it is recommended that you perform a Compare to Baseline after document Activation to ensure that characters were not incorrectly converted.

Note that Font Audit is best run on each document before activating it with eXtyles. If you run Font Audit after Activation, the results may not be accurate, and you'll see the following warning:

When unsupported fonts are identified, follow any instructions that appear in the dialog box.

The list of unsupported fonts list is not exhaustive, because of the large number of existing fonts.
