Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style

The Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style process is used to ensure that the citations in the document confirm to CADTH editorial style; that is, superscript numbers.

It should be used if the author has used a different citation numbering style (e.g., baseline numbers in brackets [1]) to convert the citations to CADTH’s correct style. But it should also be used even if the author used the correct citation style so that it can clean up formatting of the numbers in citations (e.g., changing a hyphen to an en dash in a range of citations). This process will:

  1. Clean up formatting of spacing and punctuation for the citations.

  2. Clean up the punctuation surrounding the citation. Punctuation is cleaned up for periods, commas, colons, and semicolons. Other punctuation, including surrounding quotes, require manual cleanup because the correct order may be context-dependent.

To use Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style:

1. Run eXtyles up through the Bibliographic Reference Processing function.

2. Visually check the document to note the citation style the author used (e.g., numbers in square brackets, numbers in parentheses, etc.).

For Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style always select the style that the author has used in the document, even if it is not correct CADTH editorial style. eXtyles will make the conversion during this process to correct CADTH style.

3. Select Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style from the Advanced Processing menu. You will see a dialog asking you to select the bibliographic citation style used by the author.

4. Select the appropriate style and click OK.
