PubMed Linking

eXtyles PubMed Reference Linking calls the PubMed batch citation checker for all journal references. In addition to providing links to cited content, PubMed Reference Linking and Correction will intelligently merge correct data from PubMed with your reference.

eXtyles for CADTH has two PubMed validation tools on the Advanced Processing menu: PubMed Reference Linking and Correction and PubMed Reference Linking Only.

PubMed Reference Linking and Correction

To run PubMed Reference Linking and Correction on a document you must first complete Bibliographic Reference processing, including the cleanup and reprocessing of all references that eXtyles did not automatically fix.

Then, select PubMed Reference Linking and Correction from the Advanced Processing menu. PubMed Reference Linking and Correction should take approximately 30 seconds for 60 references.

You must be connected to the Internet to successfully run the PubMed validation tools.

Reviewing Comments

Data Discrepancies

PubMed Reference Linking and Correction adds missing data and intelligently merges any revisions with existing data. The process will silently make corrections to errors such as incorrect page numbers but will providing warnings where significant discrepancies are found. For example, the following reference has a title discrepancy with the PubMed database that is too significant for eXtyles to silently correct. In this case, eXtyles will provide a Word comment that details the discrepancy:

Note that in the Word comment returned by eXtyles the title as it appears in the PubMed database is provided and styled with the correct eXtyles character style. After verifying the information, the editor can then simple copy from the comment and paste into the reference the correct title.

Retractions, Corrections, and Other Warnings

The PubMed Linking and Correction process will also warn if the reference has been retracted or corrected; for example,

The Medline link that is added during this validation process is a live hyperlink, so the editor can simply click through to the reference’s PubMed record to validate the information provided in the Word comment.

PubMed Reference Linking Only

The PubMed Reference Linking Only option on the Advanced Processing menu will link the matched journal references to their PubMed record (i.e., add a Medline link to the end of the reference) but not make any corrections, as described in the previous section.

eXtyles will still provide warnings when information in the reference does not match the PubMed record.

This process is ideal for references that have already been carefully edited prior to running any eXtyles processes.
