Word Fields

When checked, the Word Fields function converts Word fields to plain text, particularly fields generated by add-in products such as EndNote.

Auto-Numbers

When selected, the Auto-Numbers function converts numbers that were generated with Word’s auto-numbering feature to plain text. Three options are available from the drop-down menu:

  • Leave As-is: Makes no changes to Word fields

  • Remove from Lists: Converts auto-numbered Word lists to plain-text numbers

  • Remove from Lists/Heads: Converts auto-numbered Word lists and auto-numbered headings to plain-text numbers

What’s a Word field?
In MS Word, fields are actually just placeholders of text that can store and display data. For example, fields are used to count and display page numbers in a Word document, to generate tables of content, and to mark index terms or reference citations.

Word fields can interfere with proper functioning of subsequent eXtyles Advanced Processes (e.g., Citation Matching), so if they are used in your document it is best to use eXtyles Cleanup to convert them to plain text.

See the section on Field Shading in this user guide for more information about how to view fields in Word.
