List Title Style

If a list begins with a title (that is not a section heading), the List Title style should be used. 

In the XML, this is not the same as using a heading style (e.g. Head 1). The list title is wrapped inside the list structure in the XML.

Numbered and Bulleted List Styles

eXtyles JATS supports four (4) levels of numbered or bulleted lists by default. The styles Numbered/Bullet List Level 1, Numbered/Bullet List Level 2, Numbered/Bullet List Level 3, and Numbered/Bullet List Level 4 are used.

These styles do not contain any Word automated list labels. eXtyles will automatically detect the type of list on export by identifying the list label, if present (e.g., bullet character, number, letter, etc.)

In a standard eXtyles configuration, a group of contiguous list paragraphs will be exported as a single XML list.

Nested lists should be styled carefully to ensure that the nesting is reflected in the paragraph styles used. You must always use the highest available list level.

By default, eXtyles JATS does not include a <label> element in the XML containing the bullet character for bulleted lists. Instead, it assigns a @list-type attribute to the list, such as @list-type="bullet". This gives extra flexibility in rendering the XML because the rendering engine can be set to use whatever bullet or label is required in a particular environment. This works well for "standard" bullet characters (•, o, various dashes) and numbering schemes (a, b, c; i, ii, iii; 1, 2, 3; etc.)

Continued List Items

The Continued List Item styles are used for the second and subsequent paragraphs of list items at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4, as appropriate.

If a single item in the list is made up of more than one paragraph, a Continued List Item style must be used for the continuation paragraphs; otherwise, the subsequent paragraphs will be exported as separate list items.

By default, eXtyles JATS does not support other document structures such as quotes, equations, etc., inside list items. If it is necessary to interrupt a list with a non-list paragraph, such as a quote, and then continue the list, you will need a specific paragraph style (e.g. Quote in List) to allow that paragraph to appear in the list without causing the list to end in the XML file and to restart after the interposed paragraph.

Unnumbered List Style

The Unnumbered List style should be used for a group of paragraphs that constitutes a list of things, but where each item in the list is not labelled with a bullet, number, or letter. This corresponds to @list-type="simple" in the JATS XML.
