Introduction

Welcome to the world of eXtyles!

The eXtyles family of editorial and XML solutions allows publishers to automate the most time-consuming aspects of document cleanup, formatting, and editing and to produce accurate XML with the click of a mouse. All eXtyles processes are run in Microsoft Word, providing a familiar, easy-to-use environment that requires no XML expertise.

This eXtyles User Documentation provides a comprehensive overview of eXtyles for the National Park Service (NPS). Both novice and advanced eXtyles users will find this documentation useful, because it serves as both a “quick start guide” and as a detailed reference for each function in the eXtyles process.

eXtyles User Documentation is organized in the order each eXtyles process should be run. The first section, “Getting Started,” includes instructions for installing eXtyles as well as reference information useful at every stage of the eXtyles workflow. The next section, “Document Preparation,” provides information on preparing your document prior to eXtyles processing, and also provides in-depth information on Activation and Normalization. The third section, “Styling and Editing,” covers two processes that are central to all eXtyles users: Cleanup and Paragraph Styling. The fourth section, “Processing and Validation,” includes information on the Advanced Processes included in eXtyles for NPS that are used during reference, citation, and author processing. The fifth section, “Final Steps,” covers Post-Processing Cleanup and the BITS DTD XML export filter. The final two sections cover additional eXtyles tools that can be used at any point during eXtyles processing and workflow guidelines.
