Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style performs three functions:

1. Automate the conversion of numbered (Vancouver) citations between different standard editorial styles.

Standard editorial styles include brackets [2], parentheses (2), or superscript numbers “experiment.2”, or some combination thereof.

2. Clean up the spacing and punctuation in numbered (Vancouver) citations for all citation styles.

3. Clean up the punctuation surrounding the citation (e.g., change “citation1.” to “citation.1” and so on) depending on your journal requirements.

Punctuation is cleaned up for periods, commas, colons, and semicolons. Other punctuation, including surrounding quotes, require manual cleanup because the correct order may be context-dependent.

Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style should be run even if the author used the correct citation style for the journal so that it can clean up formatting of the numbers in citations (e.g., changing “[1, 3-5]” with a hyphen to “[1,3–5]” with an en dash).

 

How to use

To use Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style:

  1. Run eXtyles up through the Bibliographic Reference Processing function.

  2. Visually check the document to note the citation style the author used (e.g., numbers in square brackets, numbers in parentheses, etc.).

  3. Select eXtyles > Advanced Processing > Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style. You will see a dialog asking you to select the bibliographic citation style used by the author.

  4. Select the appropriate style and click OK.

During this step you must select the style of citation that is in use in the document even if it is incorrect. Then, eXtyles will covert the citations to the correct editorial style during this process.

eXtyles has been configured with the correct citation style, so there’s not need to enter this information. You only need to choose the citation style the author used in the document.



Pay special attention when styling paragraphs to make sure that there are no extra hard returns in the middle of references, because extra hard returns in references will cause problems for both bibliographic reference processing and citation processing.

Convert/Clean Numbered Citation Style should not be used in documents with Name/Date (Harvard) style citations. If your eXtyles configuration includes the Harvard-to-Vancouver Citation Conversion module, only use Convert/Clean Numbered Citations after the conversion has been successfully run on the document.
